A Bigger Splash is an extraordinary and fabulous audiovisual rarity. It is the semi-fictional documentary biography of David Hockney’s painful breakup with his then-partner Peter Schlesinger. Featuring many of the members of Hockney’s circle, it includes designers Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark, artist Patrick Procktor, gallerist John Kasmin and museum curator Henry Geldzahler.

Made in 1974 by Jack Hazan, unreleased until a decade later and now remastered to the delight of the general public, this documentary masterfully blends fictional and real elements and became a true pioneer for its brilliant insight into Hockney’s life and work at its peak, guided by the remnants of the “Swinging London” and LGBT scenes of the early 1970s.
