Sven Marquardt not only guards the door of the famous Berghain techno club, he is also a world-renowned artist. He began his career working as a photographer in East Berlin, capturing the city’s peculiar subcultural scene before the fall of the wall. Photographs of East Berlin in the 1980s illustrate the beauty of the deserted streets, the walled-in doors, the shot facades. His works show the unique nature of these lost places. Beauty and Decay talks about the yearning for individualism and unconventionality, rebellion, fashion, aging, love and friendship in two different ideologies.
