In the markets of Shenzhen, artists produce reproductions from the western artistic canon; however, disruption is in the air. What constitutes art and the way we relate to it are in flux. To understand the art consciousnesses of the copyist painters working there, director Paul Heintz initiated in 2017 a correspondence of paintings and drawings with one of them. Parallel to these exchanges, he developed the short film “Shanzhài Screens”, a visual production on the axes of correspondence, cinema and “para-painting”.This pointed documentary explores the nexus of changing taste, morphing artistic practice and emerging technologies.
